Ongoing Instructure Security Incident - 5/7

Update (5/8 @ 11:45am)

As we communicated yesterday and has been widely reported in national news, Instructure, the Canvas parent company, experienced a security incident late last week. Yale and many other institutions are affected.

We are writing with an update that  access to Canvas is again available. We recommend using Canvas to finish the final work of the semester. Please be aware that some Canvas functions may remain temporarily unavailable while we continue to monitor the system and maintain heightened security measures.

If you would like, you can download a copy of your Canvas gradebook as well as download assignment submissions.

We understand that you may have concerns about the potential risk to data and privacy, and we are taking measures to fully understand the scope of individuals’ exposure and address these risks. As we learn more, we will communicate directly with you.

Please continue to monitor canvas.yale.edu for the most up-to-date information. As always, please report any unusual behavior to canvas@yale.edu.

Update (5/7 @ 8:50pm)

If faculty need a way to download and access a list of their student emails so they can message students directly, you can acquire a list of student emails registered in your course by following these instructions:

  1. Log into Faculty Grading Submission (FGS) (https://fgs.app.yale.edu/ ).
  2. In the Course List screen, click on your course to get to the Grade Entry screen.
  3. In the Grade Entry screen, click the link at the top right-hand side of the screen that says ‘Print Class Roster’.
  4. In the Class Roster, click the button labelled ‘EXPORT AS EXCEL’.  The roster will download to your Downloads folder.
  5. Open the Excel file.  The email addresses for the students in your class will be in column H (emailAlias).

Update (5/7 @ 7:21pm)

The Media Library (Panopto) is also currently unavailable due to the broader security incident with Canvas.

Initial Notice (5/7 @ 5:30pm)

Canvas, the university’s learning management system, is currently down and unavailable to users. Instructure, the parent company, has been dealing with a security incident since late last week. We will share additional information and any recommended actions with the community as they become available.

We are developing guidance for students submitting work, faculty who need to complete grades, and other uses of Canvas. For instructors of record looking to retrieve grades from their Canvas Gradebook, please use this form to submit a request: Gradebook Data Request
