Requesting an External Application

Canvas Logo

The Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning reviews all third-party tools that faculty or departments indicate they are interested in using for teaching. The review process vets tools before pursuing an agreement and looks at:

  1. effectiveness
  2. security
  3. accessibility

If an instructor or department admin has identified a tool that they are interested in, they may email the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning to schedule a consultation with a member of the Poorvu Center’s Educational Technology team.

Timeline for Requests

Bringing a new tool to Canvas takes time as there are multiple components and groups in ITS, the Poorvu Center, and procurement that coordinate to ensure that the tools made available to the Yale community are safe, effective, and accessible. As a result, the process for a new external application, regardless of price or availability, must go through:

  1. Security Review
  2. Accessibility Review
  3. Contract Negations

Given this multi-stepped coordinated process, we request that you reach out with any requests for an external tool to be explored in advance of the follow dates for the term indicated:

  • March 1 for the fall term
  • October 1 for the spring term
  • December 1 for the summer term

Note

Yale does not develop custom integrations for External Applications created by third parties.

There are limited funds for licensing tools and facilitating pilots. Please be aware that we cannot fund the purchasing of tools for individual programs or instructors.

Programs and Professional Schools may purchase a tool for their individual use, which will still be subject to Yale’s security, accessibility, and contract requirements prior to installation in Canvas @ Yale for their population.

Please reach out to the Poorvu Center’s Educational Technology team if you have more questions.
